Government Examines Feasibility of Building a High-Speed Rail

PHNOM PENH: The Royal Government of Cambodia is examining the possibility of transforming the existing railway line into a high-speed railway from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh and from Phnom Penh to Poipet city in Banteay Meanchey province. In Addition, from Poipet to Siem Reap to Kampong Thom and Phnom Penh and a railway line connecting Phnom Penh to Bavet on the Vietnamese border to reduce traffic congestion and increase Cambodia's transport capacity.

This is according to the announcement of the results of the Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister of Cambodia on Thursday morning.

Cambodian railways began construction in the 1930s and 1940s. Cambodia Railway has two lines, the northern line and the southern line, with a total length of 650 km, which connects Poipet to Phnom Penh and from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. Both railways were severely damaged and some parts were completely destroyed by the Democratic Cambodia regime.

Currently, both railways have been built and rehabilitated through a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Royal Railway Company of Cambodia.
